Course summary

· Are you 19 years or older? · Do you want a career in Healthcare? · Do you need a Level 3 Qualification to meet the entry requirements for University?   On successful completion of the Access to Higher Education Diploma (Psychology), you will receive a Skills & Education Group Access, QAA recognised, Access to Higher Education Diploma at Level 3 with 60 credits. As part of your programme, you will also receive help as well as guidance on your university application and the research you need to do to get the most out of your diploma.

Course requirements

· You will need GCSE English at Grade A-C (4-9) or equivalent (Level 2 Functional Skills) and GCSE Maths at Grade A-C (4-9) or equivalent (Level 2 Functional Skills).

· Some Universities will only accept GCSEs to meet entry requirements. They will also require you to have additional GCSEs at Grade A-C (4-9) for some courses, including a science for some pathways.

· As the course is fully online you must have strong ICT skills to enable you to cope with the demands of the course.

· You will also need to have your own laptop

Blended course – You will have the opportunity to come into college for ‘drop-in’ support sessions with your specialist tutor who can provide guidance and support with your assignments and access remote support during the working week.

Your study materials, resources, textbooks and assignments are provided and supported using the innovative PEARL platform, with ongoing support from the experienced and subject specialist Access to HE curriculum team.

Module 1: Reading and Note Making

  • Understand the use of language in terms of the purpose and context of a range of texts
  • Be able to use methods for developing notes from a range of sources

 

Module 2: Academic Writing Skills

 

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

 

  • Be able to structure a written response
  • Be able to develop a structured response to a plan
  • Be able to present the response appropriately for audience and purpose
  • Understand how to apply academic writing principles to own work

 

Module 3: Perspectives in Psychology

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand different psychological perspectives
  • Understand the differences between alternative psychological perspectives
  • Understand the application of psychological perspectives to contemporary issues in psychology

Module 4: Crime and Society

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand crime and deviance
  • Understand crime statistics
  • Understand theoretical explanations of crime
  • Understand social and cultural patterns of crime and criminality

Module 5: Cognitive Psychology

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand theories relating to cognitive psychology
  • Understand the contribution of cognitive psychology research to our understanding of three of the following:

(a) development

(b) memory

(c) attention

(d) perception

(e) language and thought

Module 6: Child Development Early Socialisation

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the nature/nurture debate in early socialisation
  • Understand early socialisation and the formation of attachment

Module 7: Developmental Psychology

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the nature/nurture debate in developmental psychology
  • Understand early socialisation and the formation of attachment
  • Understand cognitive development and the ways in which children process and use information
  • Understand the application of developmental psychology theories in the real world
  • Understand psychological changes that accompany ageing

Module 8: Social Interaction

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand theories of Social Influence

Module 9: Biopsychology: Behaviour and the Brain

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the concept of localisation of function
  • Understand the strengths and weaknesses of methods of investigating the relationship between the brain and behaviour
  • Understand the interaction between the brain and behaviour

Module 10: Psychological Disorders and Therapeutic Strategies

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand theoretical explanations for a psychological disorder
  • Understand the theoretical basis for different therapeutic strategies used in the treatment of psychological disorders
  • Understand the effectiveness of different treatments for psychological disorders

Module 11: Health Psychology Perspectives

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the role of psychological factors in physical health and illness
  • Understand the role of behavioural factors in physical health and illness
  • Understand the role of social/cultural factors in physical health and illness

Module 12: Biopsychology: Behaviour and Drugs

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand how neurotransmitters in the brain control behaviour
  • Understand the action of drugs on synaptic transmission
  • Understand how psychoactive drugs change behaviour
  • Understand the role of serotonin antagonists and reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of disorders

Module 13: Psychological Profiling

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the main principles of psychological profiling
  • Understand the application and effectiveness of psychological theories in profiling the criminal

Module 14: Impact of Forensic Psychology in Criminal Investigations

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the roles of the Forensic Psychologist
  • Understand how psychologists have contributed to jury behaviour and eyewitness memory
  • Understand offender profiling
  • Be able to apply an offender profiling technique

Module 15: Social Psychology

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the processes involved in interpersonal attraction
  • Understand the nature and function of attitude formation and attitude change
  • Understand the processes involved in prejudice and discrimination
  • Understand the role of situational factors in the determination of behaviours
  • Understand how social influences affect behaviour
  • Understand the role of power and leadership in social group

Module 16: Aggression

Upon successful completion of this module, you will:

  • Understand the explanations for aggression from different psychological perspectives
  • Understand the strategies for reducing aggression and their effectiveness

Your UCAS application will cost £28.50.

 

Learning is assessed in a variety of methods to prepare you to study at university. These may include essays, report writing, online assessment, and presentations.

You must achieve 60 credits at Level 3 to be awarded the Access to HE Diploma:

Graded - 45 are Graded Credits in Academic Modules at Pass, Merit or Distinction

Ungraded: 15 are Ungraded Credits in Study Skills.

Learners who complete this qualification can progress to university for an Undergraduate Degree or Degree Apprenticeships.
