Energy company enfinium were on site on Friday to hear Sandwell College Art & Design students’ unique ideas for upcycling materials used in the construction of its brand-new energy-to-waste centre.
Students have been asked to create functional items or pieces of art from wood, metals, pipework and associated materials used to build enfinium’s new facility ‘Kelvin’, which currently stands at 24m tall and is visible from the M5. The final upcycled pieces will be commemorative snapshot reminders for future generations, taking site health and safety into consideration.
When complete, the Kelvin centre will be over 90m in height and will transform 395,000 tonnes of non-recyclable household and business waste into enough energy for the equivalent of more than 95,000 UK homes per year.
The winning project will be selected, made and displayed at enfinium once students have submitted their designs, detailing dimensions and colour schemes.
