Sandwell College Art students’ journey of self-discovery has led to their work being displayed at a Wolverhampton Art Gallery exhibition.
‘The More Things Change – Young Artists’ Showcase’ exhibition features the work of the founder member artists of the Blk Art Group – an association of young black British artists formed in 1979 to question what black art was, its identity and what it could become in the future.
The Blk Art Group were instrumental in shaping the emerging British ‘Black Arts Movement’ through ground-breaking creative practice, exhibitions, activism and events. Britain’s art history was profoundly transformed by this collective from the Midlands and continues to reverberate today.
During this project the students drew inspiration from artists, Eddie Chambers, Keith Piper, Claudette Johnson and Donald Rodney.
Art and Design Lecturer Tallon Hines said: “Our first year students participated in a workshop based around self-identity where they were challenged to produce a creative response to the posed question ‘what do people see when they look at me?’ Sandwell College prides itself on its diversity, inclusion and celebrating cultural differences.”
Curriculum Leader for Visual Arts, Rupinder Sandhu, said: “Overall, the students have really enjoyed the project, and have embraced the opportunity to develop their personal identities as young creatives and this has enriched their educational experiences.”
The exhibition runs until July 21, 2023 at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Entry is free, with no booking required.
