STEM Success

Maya is a former Sandwell College engineering student, who continues to inspire the world with her extraordinary achievements.

Maya is the world’s first female Syrian refugee pilot, a trailblazer who exemplifies the power of resilience, determination, and education. After completing her degree in Aviation Engineering with Pilot Studies at Brunel University, she joined the TUI Cadet Scheme, successfully passing all 13 Airline Pilot Licence exams. Maya recently took her first flight on the DA40 aircraft out of Oxford London Airport and is now set to soar even higher as she transitions to the mighty Boeing 737.

Maya says: “Even if you don’t think you will make it to the end or that you don’t have “enough” or that there will be others better than you, take the chance and just try the process. Don’t ever let anyone determine your story for you. We write our own.”
