Alumni Alex: From Builder’s Assistant to Award-Winning Architectural Student

The journey isn’t defined by how you start, but by how you finish.

When former Sandwell College student Anargyros (Alex) Tsochan moved to the UK from Greece, he knew just a few words of English. To support his family, Alex worked part-time as a builder’s assistant. At the same time, he threw himself into learning the language, gaining ESOL qualifications.

That was just the beginning.

Alex discovered a hidden talent for Art & Design and achieved DDD in his BTEC Level 3 at Sandwell College.

His passion for construction led him to study Architectural Technology at Birmingham City University, where he’s been named Best Student of the Year two years in a row.

Today, Alex is putting his skills into practice as an Architectural Assistant at global engineering firm WSP.

“No time is wasted if you learn from it. Hard work brings opportunity, and many more to come.”

Alex’s journey proves that resilience, curiosity, and ambition can shape a future beyond borders.
