Course summary

Sports Coaching and Sports Development is a rapidly growing specialism within the sports industry, thanks largely to the additional investment and increased awareness in recent years. The course is designed for student who are preparing for future employment in the Sports industry, in particular it prepares students for roles that require a Coaching Development background.

Course requirements

64 UCAS Points or MPP Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport / Sport Exercise Science.
Five GCSE’s at Grade C or above (or equivalent) that should include a form of Mathematics and English. All applicants will be invited to interview.

The HND adopts a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Sports Coaching and Development and focuses on the theoretical and practical aspects of Sports Coaching, the organisation and structure of Sports Development as well as the important role played by Sport Science and Fitness Training.

In addition, the HND in Sports Coaching and Development qualification develops students’ personal skills enabling them to become independent learners who can progress onto the final stages of a degree course and employment.

Course Details-
Year 1- Applied Sports Coaching, The Evolution of Sports Development, The Sport and Leisure Industry, Principles of Sports Coaching, Sport and Exercise Massage, Sport and Exercise for Specific Groups, Sport and Exercise Psychology and Training and Fitness for Sports Exercise.

Year 2- Research Project, Managing Sports Development, Work-based Experience, Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation, Analysis of Sports Performance, Anatomy and Physiology for Sport and Exercise and Physical Activity, Lifestyle and Wellbeing.

On completion of the HND, students can enrol onto the final year of a BA or BSC programme to convert their HND into a full honours degree at universities such as the University of Gloucestershire, University of Worcester and Newman University.

Career paths from this course include; Sports Teacher, Sports Coach, Sports Centre Manager, Sports Development Officer, Sport Initiative Programme Coaching in the Voluntary, Public and Private Sector and Charity Trust Sport Campaigners.
