This BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering is an advanced, two-year full-time course designed for young people who have an interest in broad engineering disciplines and wish to gain a nationally recognised qualification at Level 3. It is ideal if you want to progress to university, an advanced apprenticeship or employment.
You’ll need five GCSEs, including Maths at Grade 5-6/B, English at Grade 4/C or above and three other relevant subjects at Grade 4/C or above. Experience shows that a high Mathematics grade is an advantage for this course and you will need to discuss this further with your tutor.
The course requires a minimum of 30 hours work experience. The college will assist with your placement, but students are encouraged to find their own as part of industrial familiarisation. This qualification provides a route to various engineering degrees and also apprenticeships.
This BTEC Engineering Level 3 course involves studying 15 units, seven of which are mandatory. Three units are externally assessed.
The mandatory units are:
Other units offered will include Further Engineering Mathematics, and a broad range of engineering units to support a variety of career paths and university courses.
After successful completion of the first year, students will have gained a Foundation Diploma. They may then choose to go on to gain the full Extended Diploma in the second year.
Guest speakers from industry are frequently invited to the college and there are also visits to local companies and engineering exhibitions. Recent activities have included visits to universities, companies, London and Blackpool.
Apart from the three external examinations, all other units are internally assessed by assignment to national standards.
A large proportion of our BTEC Level 3 Engineering students go on to study a variety of engineering disciplines at university. Students can also progress to higher apprenticeships or into the industry as technician engineers.
