This Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts Practice – Technical Theatre is a two-year full-time course aimed at people who wish to work in theatre/performance venues in a technical capacity.

You’ll need four or more GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including English, and/or a Level 2 qualification or equivalent.

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts Practice – Technical Theatre course recognises the technical skills, knowledge and understanding needed to work within the Performing Arts/Entertainment industries.

You need to complete 18 units to pass this course successfully. Examples of units you may study on the course include:

  • Production Workshop
  • Sound for Stage
  • Stage Management
  • Stage Lighting Design
  • Automated Lighting
  • TIE and Video Imagery

The course will allow you to develop your technical skills and give you an in-depth understanding of the importance of the technical team. You will gain practical experience in a wide range of college productions such as pantomimes, dance shows, fashion shows and plays. You may also have the chance to do work experience.

Students have opportunities to see professional performances in the West End as well as locally. You also have the opportunity to engage with community and local authority organisations.

You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework and practical work. Learning methods include practical workshops, theatre productions, private study, tutorials, theatre visits and class work.

After completing this Level 3 Extended Diploma in Production Arts Practice – Technical Theatre course, you can either go straight into employment or to university.

Recent students have gone on to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Guildford School of Acting, Birmingham School of Acting, Apprenticeship at Outback Rigging, and many others.

Future careers include stage manager, events manager or community arts worker.
