Course summary

This T Level course is suitable for school leavers interested in a career in maintenance, installation and repair for engineering and manufacturing.

Course requirements

You should have 5 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including Maths and English.

Core component (Year 1)

Topics include:
• Working within the engineering and manufacturing sectors
• Engineering and manufacturing past, present, and future
• Essential mathematics for engineering and manufacturing
• Essential science for engineering and manufacturing
• Materials and their properties
• Health and safety principles and coverage
• Stock and asset management
• Project and programme management

Occupational specialism (Year 2)

Topics include:
• Mechanical Specialism:
- Mechanical principles and systems
- How components are removed, replaced and repaired
- Skills to plan and prepare mechanical maintenance activities using evaluation
- Skills to select and use tools, equipment, machinery and technology safely and effectively

• Electrical and Electronics Specialism:
- Construction and operation of standard power conversion systems
- How components are removed, replaced and repaired
- Skills to plan and prepare electrical and electronic maintenance activities
- Skills to select and use tools, equipment, machinery and technology safely and effectively

Industrial placement
• 315 hours of industrial placement
- Taster sessions delivered by employers
- Hands-on industry experience at an employer’s company

Activities are linked to employers, such as site visits. You will also benefit from a work readiness programme to develop your essential skills.

Apprenticeship options at Level 4 may include Automation and Controls Engineering Technician and Lead Engineering Maintenance Technician.

Degree options may include Civil and Railway Engineer, Electrical and Railway Engineer, Civil Engineer and Mechanical Engineer.

Career progression routes may include Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician, Utility Engineering Technician, Commercial Catering Equipment Technician and Automation and Controls Engineering Technician.
