Choosing your College course is not always easy, especially given the wide range of courses there are on offer to you!
So we’ve come up with 6 top tips to make this decision less daunting.
- Look at all the courses on offer. Here at Sandwell College, we have one of the largest course offers in the region with over 100 courses to choose from – with everything from automotive and hairdressing to construction and travel and hospitality. Take a look at the different subject areas and make sure you’re not ruling any out. You can take a look at our courses in our digital prospectus here.
- Attend Open Events. We have multiple Open Events on throughout the year where you can ask teaching staff all the questions you may have. Plus you can talk to our support staff such as the careers team, welfare, student support and student union which can give you an idea of the extent of support you’ll receive when studying at Sandwell College. Take a look at our upcoming events here.
- Choose subjects you’ll enjoy. We always ask students which courses they enjoy at school as this often means you’ll be more motivated to do the work at College. However, make sure you take a look at the course specifics as it could be different to what you’ve been used to for GCSE.
- Think about the future. If you’re thinking about a specific career, a university degree, or an apprenticeship you’d like to go into after college, pick a subject that is likely to help you get there. When you attend Open Events, you will be able to discuss these types of questions with curriculum and careers staff.
- Don’t just choose what your friends are doing. We know going into a classroom alone may be daunting, but just remember others are in the same boat. You’re better off choosing a subject you enjoy rather than doing a subject a friend has chosen and you finding it difficult or uninteresting. And you’ll make new friends on your course!
- Don’t panic about your application. If you choose a specific course and then decide further down the line you want to change, we will accommodate you as best we can to get you on to your preferred course. It’s best to put your application in as early as possible because you will be invited to our exclusive Discovery Days and will be sent useful information to get you ready for College.
