It was a privilege to welcome Mayor Richard Parker of the West Midlands Combined Authority to Sandwell College.
The Mayor met with CEO & Principal Lisa Capper MBE, Deputy Principal Asa Gordon, wider college teams and learners to explore the vital role of real-world skills in engineering and workforce development.

The visit focused on several key areas:
– Engineering skills development: the Mayor toured our Automotive Department, where students showcased their work on electric vehicles and welding (both virtual and practical)
– T Level progression: we discussed how work placements and T Level qualifications are helping students make a seamless transition into engineering roles with top employers in the region – with a showcase on hydraPower dynamics, where we were joined by HR Business Partner Sonia Smalling
– Adult skills and employment pathways: the event highlighted the impact of our Sector Work-based Academy Programmes with Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust, offering adults a clear route into healthcare roles. We also showcased how ESOL learners are gaining language skills essential for successful careers in the workforce.

This visit reinforced the importance of equipping learners with industry-specific skills to meet the demands of today’s job market. We are proud to continue our work with the West Midlands Combined Authority to help bridge the gap between education and employment.
