Due to major demand Sandwell College is launching a new academy specialising in health, care and life sciences – providing the career professionals of the future.
The academy, launching today, draws on the college’s solid and extensive foundations in health and social care, childhood studies, dental nursing and pharmacy apprenticeships, together with its state-of-the-art scientific laboratories, classrooms and study spaces.
A strong track record of progression from college to university has seen 86 per cent of Level 3 Health and Social Care learners from 2013/14 go on to study midwifery, nursing and psychology degrees.
Ninety per cent of Access to Higher Education learners from 2013/14 also went on to university to study for careers in health, teaching and social science.
And 100 per cent of the college’s apprentices in the health sector have gone on to permanent jobs in pharmacy, dental nursing and care.
To add to this success Central Sixth, Sandwell College’s sixth form centre, had a 100 per cent pass rate in 19 different A Levels last year, with well above national average pass rates in chemistry, physics and biology.
Former students are now studying for careers in medicine and pharmacy at top universities.
Sandwell College Principal Graham Pennington said: “The academy offers a full range of courses from bespoke short courses, aimed at improving your skills in the workplace, through to high level of qualifications that will gain you entry into university.
“Parents and guardians can trust in our long track record of supporting young people in a safe, focused and caring environment which provides the very best range of opportunities for their children to achieve their potential.”
The college’s team of caring staff with extensive experience to offer includes a team leader who was a midwife for nearly 20 years, a tutor who worked for many years as a care manager, a former social worker with around 20 years’ experience, a sedation and orthodontic nurse, a health community nurse, a radiography nurse and a practice manager.
